The Bridport triathlon returns in 2020 and is a pool based Triathlon aimed at all levels of fitness and ability, the shorter distance option makes this event perfect for someone that’s taking part in their first event or if you have entered triathlons before and are looking to improve on your sprint distance ability.
After the success of the Bridport triathlon in 2019 and we are running the event again to encourage people to take on the challenge of this great sport.
You can enter the event as an individual and complete all three disciplines over the Sprint or shorter distance Super sprint, or as a relay team with friends or colleagues.(One person to do each element, so 3 different people in total).
For 2020 there is also a FREE to enter junior triathlon, the tri stars will have three entry levels,
As with all the events your age group is based on your age at 31/12/2020, please make sure you enter the correct event.
And if you dont fancy swimming enter the Duathlon for an equally testing challenge.
What is Triathlon?
Triathlon is a multi-discipline event where people compete against the clock and each other. Swimming, cycling and running with no break except for the transition (this is a quick pit stop to change for the next discipline).
Information for beginners (Super-sprint) (200m-19km-3km)
This event is aimed at beginners and we expect most of the field will be taking on their first triathlon. All you need is a swimming costume or trunks, goggles (not compulsory), a bike (road or mountain bike if it is in roadworthy condition), a cycle helmet (compulsory) and a pair of trainers.
So, go on give it a tri! You will be given full instructions before the event and if you have any questions please don't hesitate to get in touch, by email or social media.
The individual triathlon (Sprint) (400m-25km-5km)
This is open to anyone over the age of 15 (on 31/12/2020). You must complete all three disciplines with no outside assistance. Your time will be taken from when you start the swim to when you finish the run (Chip timed).
The Junior triathlon
This is open to anyone aged 14 and under (on 31/12/2020). And will start at approx. 1300 (TBC) This will be all on the field next to the leisure centre and totally traffic free. It is all about taking part, if you need to rest, stop at any point during the event, you can, we just want the younger athletes to get around and take part whatever their ability. Full, understandable, instructions will be given on the day and the juniors will be in view for a lot of the event making it great for family members and spectators.
The relay triathlon
Each member of the team completes one discipline.(The sprint course)
The first member swims the 400m and runs out to tag the cyclist (HAND OVER THE CHIP TIMING) who then continues on the 25K bike, on their return the cyclist tags the runner who goes on to complete the run to finish the event.
The swim - 200m / 400m
To start the event you need to swim either 8 or 16 lengths of the heated swimming pool (any stroke is fine) and then you make your way to the transition area and prepare for the bike ride.
The bike - 19km / 25km
After completing the swim you will then jump on your bike for 19K or 25K around the local country lanes. The route is hilly in places so please pace yourselves accordingly.
Run - 3km / 5km
Once the bike has been completed you then return to transition for the run, this is 5K around the surrounding paths and includes some off-road sections.
The Duathlon event will consist of a 3 km (2.92 km), a 25 km bike, and a 5 km (4.65) km run. The second run is a different route to the first.
The centre has ample toilets, full changing facilities and showers. You will also be able to purchase refreshments at the event.
Start times (between 9am and 11am) (If you enter an incorrect swim time a penalty of 10 mins will be applied to your finish time)
Your exact start time will be determined by the swim time on your entry form. Please be as accurate as possible so that you will be swimming with people of similar ability with faster competitors setting off later in the day.
We are always in need of marshals on the course so if there are any partners or friends out there that are willing to help please get in touch with us and you will be rewarded with a Free entry to an event of your choice (this can be transferred to another person).
What is transition
Each triathlon has a special place called a transition area (and there is almost always only one such zone) where participants change gear and clothing and do anything else, they might need to do before moving on to the next stage. Now, you might think this would be a good time to catch your breath, pop an energy bar or wax eloquent about your favourite electrolyte with the other athletes. If you're doing the triathlon for fun or to just see if you can finish, then knock yourself out. In fact, first-time triathletes should be more concerned with getting familiar with the whole scene.
But if you're in it to win, the transition can easily make or break you -- and the clock keeps on ticking. Moving between events in the most efficient way possible means you won't have to make up that time on the bike or during the run, conserving energy for when you really need it. If you think for a moment about how long it takes to take a drink, put on some socks or eat a granola bar, you can begin to appreciate just how important the transition can be.
Triathlon Race Day Checklist
The transition area is located just outside the leisure centre pool doors, its 10 metres from the changing rooms, and we would ask that after you have racked your bike you park in the Football club car park, this will ensure enough space for the leisure centre to stay open during the event (Its free to park).
There are lockers for your clothing and showers are available after the event.
Registration will take place on the morning of the event; nothing will be sent in the post.
At registration you will receive everything you need for the race.
Registration and transition will open at 07:15 and close at 08:45.
The first Swim waves will start at 0900.
