The Hurtleberry

Title: My first Hurtleberry
I love being out in the woods in autumn and the Hurtleberry Duathlon reminded me why. Crisp morning air, damp under foot and the foliage just on the turn. I've cycled the Surrey hills a fair bit but never ran here so I was curious as to how I would get on. It was reassuring to see plenty of folks my age at the start but a bit unsettling to see how fit they looked.
The event started bang on time and I was quickly introduced to running in the Surrey hills. Careering down muddy slopes and struggling up gravel paths, by the time we got to the split for the 10K runners I was glad I'd opted for the sprint duathlon. At the transition I was happy to be on the bike and looking forward to seeing what route they had picked. I was overjoyed as we plunged down Telegraph Row and swooped through Yoghurt Pots, we were doing all the best bits! After the struggle of the 5K run I entered transition for the 1.5K with a bit of trepidation but the euphoria of the MTB ride meant I hit the final run in great spirits. The finish came round far quicker than I expected.
So how would I sum up the Hurtleberry? "Challenging", "friendly",  "laid back" would about sum it up. Oh and "highly recommended"!

Title: A proper offroad duathlon
Great fun race with a bit of everything I've done lots off events advertised as off road that end up being running/riding around a field or up and down fire tracks = boring. This event had a bit of everything up and tough and down and technical over every type of terrain so really fun. The mountain bike was much more technically demanding than I expected lots of twisty single track and could have done with some plastic course tape just in the woods on both the bike and run to help with navigation as I took several wrong turns which is easily done when you don't know where you're going and your heart is going 180 bpm. Apart from that minor gripe the organisation of the event was fantastic and the course design was brilliant a really tough but fun course. I'll definitely be back next year to improve on my 6 th place finish.

Title: Proper off road!
great to have a proper off road course that used some of the fab trails in this area. Same for run courses.
Route marking was great, not easy on an area like this. I'm a local but still didn't know where I was at times!
More participants would have been good - or maybe just have one 'mid' distance duathlon so more people racing together.
Would also have been nice for more people to finish at the same time, so maybe stagger the starts more?
anyway, great event and day out.
