GH Weekend

Next Race: 24/06/2022

Village Hall, East Street Sydling St Nicholas, Dorchester, DT2 9NU

White Star Running’s flagship event weekend returns and, as always, is so popular. Winning several awards for Britain’s Best Marathon over the years, it’s easy to see why runners love the feel of this event. Taking over the village of Sydling St Nicholas, the villagers welcome runners, making you part of the community for the weekend.

This event weekend provides something for all the family, with two tough races on Saturday, a barn dance in the village hall for those who can still walk on Saturday evening, and then a fun Bell race on Sunday. The Bell race challenges anyone to take on the run to reach the top of the hill and do a task set by team at the top. Then, run down the hill with your medal clonking away like a proper Alpine Cow.

Both race routes are very, very challenging and hilly, running through the Sydling and Cerne valleys. It's certainly not for the faint hearted; it's a tough race, with some steep climbs, sharp descents and the most amazing views to reward yourself with. If you’re not sure what to expect, here’s a race review to help you get a feel for the race.

NEW FOR 2022. When you enter our races you will be able to opt out of receiving your finisher's goodies, which we usually hand out at the end of the race. Instead, the cost of your goody bag will be donated to the Wilder Dorset Appeal, and you can read more about that project here. If you don’t opt out, you will still get your goody bag, and you can optionally choose to make a personal contribution if you wish here. Every runner still gets a medal.

The Bell race will open in April for pre-entry.

NEW for 2022 Giants Half Marathon – Giant’s Half to extend the weekend! Now, after much umming and aahing, we’ve worked with the village to create what will be the bestest half marathon in the world ever: the Giant’s Half Marathon (we spent ages on the title you can tell). It will be hilly; there will be an epic medal with a willy on it; you will be running over lots of the terrain that the marathon runs on… except it’s only half the way and you won’t be so tired.

Seriously, we realise Giant’s Head is a great weekend and not everyone can get in the marathon or hill race, and some of you don’t like to run that far. We have been working with the village to create this race, so they can earn some monies as the pandemic hit us all, including small villages in Dorset. We want to help.

We would also like to invite you to Sunday lunch at the Sydling Village Hall. Everyone invited. Roast dinners post-event, pay in advance; veggie and vegan available as well.

    Bell Race

    £0.00
    More Details
    Description

The Bell Race is an established part of the Giants Head weekend, which allows White Star Running and you guys to have a bit of a fun run while raising some much-needed funds for the Church Bells and new Play Park.

The race costs £7 and you need to pay this IN CASH when you collect your race numbers from the village green. As this race always proves very popular, we're giving you the chance to pre-register here and guarantee yourself a place, as opposed to waiting until the race weekend.

It is a 3km fun run starting on the village green at Sydling St. Nicholas. This race is in aid of the village church and play park in Sydling to help keep them running (hence the name). Just a bit of fun like our other Chaos races, open to any age. The race is not timed. Just register and expect the unexpected!

All finishers will get a unique Cow Bell medal. The difference is that you get your medal only when you reach the top of the hill and do a task set by team. Then run back down the hill with your medal clonking away like a proper Alpine Cow. Prize for first bloke and first lady.

The team from the village of Sydling will be in the village hall afterwards for teas and coffees post race, followed by Sunday Lunch from Noon. Read more about the Bells here.

    Camping Pitch

    £25.00
    Camping Pitch
    More Details
    Description

For all our events the campsites are huge and right in the centre of the race, a short walk from the start/finish and registration areas. We operate them on a very relaxed level, and ask that people behave responsibility and with others in mind when on and around the site.

Our 2022 camping price is £25 for a weekend pitch, regardless of the number of people in the tent, caravan, camper, motorhome, etc.

This field, or as we like to call it ‘The Athletes’ Village’, usually has had all the cows, sheep and horses removed (there may be poo, it is the countryside, get over it) and you are able to drive your car onto the field. If you have a massive camper van or Winnebago it should fit in the gate. If it doesn't, come and find us we will work out a way of squeezing you in.

Portalavs will be onsite; there will not be any toilet paper provided. There will be drinking water supply. We will have showers and they are free to use.

If you bring your dog to camp, please, please, pick up any poos they will leave and dispose of them sensibly. The fields will be returned to the owners for their normal use, so we don't want any cows and their young picking up nasty infections from the dog poo. Please look after your dogs. That means control them; do not let them near any farm animals at any time. We don't want you to get in trouble and your dog or livestock hurt or distressed.
