What is the Knight Frank Schools Triathlon?

The Knight Frank Schools Triathlon is an opportunity for children to get involved in sport and raise money for Restless Development and your school’s chosen charity. Children from school years 3-8 to enter in teams of four in a triathlon relay where each team member must complete each sporting discipline. We encourage children of all abilities to take part, from competitive teams to those who want to have a fun day out with friends.

How long is the course?

How much does it cost?

The Knight Frank Schools Triathlon is free to enter. However, by signing up each team member commits to a fundraising target of £100, with a minimum of £60 to be able to take part.

Question 4

What charity does the fundraising support?

The first £100 raised will go to Restless Development. Anything raised between £100 and £150 will go to your participating school's chosen charity. Anything raised over £150 will be donated to Restless Development as the organising charity.

Who is Restless Development?

Restless Development is the charity that organises the Knight Frank Schools Triathlon. Restless Development, an international development charity that puts young people at the very heart of dealing with the issues that affect them, their communities, and their countries. Restless Development leads youth-led development by delivering health, education and employment skills to young people across Africa and Asia. Our approach works, and it’s different. But we need your support through the Schools Triathlon with vital funding to help us reach our full potential and reach as many young people as possible.

What will my start time be?

We will email you your team's start time, along with the event information 4 weeks before the event date. However here is a rough guide to help you plan your day; Years 3-4 - 9am - 12pm Years 5-6 - 1pm - 4.30pm Years 7-8 - 12pm - 1pm

What is a wave?

All athletes are placed in groups or “waves” broken down by age category. As the triathlon is in a pool 5/6 teams of 4 will start in each wave. Once these teams have finished their relay the next wave will start. Each wave has a staggered start time to ensure that the race course is not too busy and is therefore safe.

Are spectators encouraged?

Absolutely. This is a fun day for family and friends and support makes all the difference to the children completing this challenge. The better the atmosphere the more fun the competitors will have so please come along.

What is the ballot?

To ensure fairness the Schools Triathlon operates a two stage registration process. Firstly, one parents enters the whole team into the ballot. The will receive a confirmation email at this stage that the team has been entered. If successful in securing a place, each parent will be individually emailed to complete their child's registration. Only when the whole teams registrations are complete is their space confirmed,

What is the waiting list?

Our events are often oversubscribed so we operate a waiting list. If your team is on the waiting list we will notify you if a place becomes available for the event. You will also be awarded priority when registering the following year.

Did I get a place?

Accepted Answer

You will receive an email to complete your registration if your team have been successful in the ballot. We aim to notify teams if they have been successful within 2 weeks of their schools deadline to enter the ballot.

Question 14

I missed the deadline, can we still enter?

Accepted Answer

As our events are often oversubscribed, we cannot guarantee places to teams who have missed the deadline. However, please still register your interest and we will then notify you if a space becomes available.

Question 15

Can we enter a team of 3 or 5?

Accepted Answer

We do allow teams of either 3 or 5. However, every team that completes the Schools Triathlon has to do the same distances which is 4x the swim, cycle and run. Therefore, with teams of 3 each member has to do an extra turn at one of the sports. They can decide who does what amongst the team. For a team of 5 one member has to sit out of the swimming section, or they can share the distance between them. Then either someone could sit out of the cycle/ run or two participants could go around the course at the same time.

Can my child take part if they are not a confident swimmer?

Yes, we have a few options for teams who do not have confident swimmers. Firstly, we allow arm bands or swimming aids. Alternatively, one team member could swim twice and then the non-swimmer could cycle or run twice in return. Additionally, we do allow some teams of 5, which may be a good option if one team member isn't comfortable taking on extra swimming.

I haven't received an email?

If you have not received an email from us confirming your registration or start time then please check your junk folder. If the email is not there, then it's likely that your email address is incorrect in our system. Please email us at schoolstriathlon@restlessdevelopment.org with the correct email and your child's name so we can correct this.

Our school is not on the list, can we still enter?

We'd always love having new schools involved! Email us your schools name and which event you would like to sign up for and we will add your school to the list - schoolstriathlon@restlessdevelopment.org

When will I get my start time?

You will be emailed your child's start time 4 weeks before the event. Please arrive 1 hour before this start time to ensure you have time to register.

When will we receive our hoodies?

Any hoodies pre-ordered at registration will either be delivered in the weeks before the event or available to collect on the day from the Restless Development tent.

How much do I need to fundraise?

Can we fundraise as a team?

It is up to you whether you choose to fundraise individually or with a team page. If you set up a team page please do so under one participant, then title the page the team name and set the fundraising target to be the collective £400 goal. Once the page is set up please email us the link and we will make a note that it is for the whole team - schoolstriathlon@restlessdevelopment.org

Are there prizes for fundraising?

Accepted Answer

Yes, every participant who reaches the fundraising minimum of £60 will receive a certificate. Our top fundraisers from each event will also be invited to collect a special fundraising medal on the day.

When will my child receive their certificate?

Fundraising certificates are sent to the participating schools before the end of the summer term.

Will the event still go ahead if the weather is bad?

Accepted Answer

Come rain or shine, the Schools Triathlon will still take place! We will ensure it is as accessible as possible to all and take all necessary steps to ensure it is as safe and enjoyable - whatever the weather. If it looks set to be a chilly day please do dress appropriately, wearing layers under your event t-shirts. Water will also be provided as well as first aiders to ensure the triathlon is safe, accessible and enjoyable for all.

When do I get my free triathlon t-shirt?

A free t-shirt is provided to every participant that signs up to the event. These will be available for collection on event day from the Restless Development tent.

Can I buy other merchandise?

Hoodies are also available for purchase either during the online registration or on the day at the Restless Development tent.

Can I hand in my fundraising on the day?

Accepted Answer

Yes, please head to the Restless Development tent at the event (where the hoodies are sold). Offline donations can be paid by card machine or handed in as cash or a cheque.

Are children (as a team) allowed to use the same bike?

Accepted Answer

Yes! As long as you are relatively the same height. Every child must bring their own helmet.

Can I use any stroke for the swim?

Accepted Answer

We allow any stroke for the swimming section, apart from backstroke. We do not allow back stroke due to safety reasons, as universally in triathlons the signal for distress and needing help is to turn and float on your back so that it is really easily visible. We do also allow kick boards or small floatation devices for the swim.

Can I bring a dog?

While we love dogs they do not mix well with kids and bikes so unfortunately no dogs can come to the event.

Is the triathlon timed?

For those of you who want to keep an eye on your speed, yes the triathlon is timed! On the day your team will be given one time chip to wrap around your ankle. This is only for the bike and run courses. Swimming times will be recorded separately. Results are posted online the day after the race and an email notification will be sent to every participant.

Will there be any water available during the cycle/run?

Yes, there will be one or more feed stations around the course serving water.

Can I listen to music during the triathlon?

Unfortunately, for your own and other competitors' safety it is not permitted to use any music system that restricts your hearing during the event. However, there will be music playing at the event over the loudspeaker.

Do I get a medal?

Each participant receives a medal when they pass the finish line.

Will there be food and drink available?

Accepted Answer

Yes we have have a variety of food vans at our events, and an ice cream truck. However, spectators are also allow to bring their own food if they'd prefer.

How long will it take to complete the course?

We estimate that it takes 2 hours maximum to complete the course. However, teams usually average 1 hour 30 minutes.

What clothing should my child wear?

Participants must bring swimming kit as well as clothes suitable to cycle/run in. Athletes start the race in their swimsuits. Once the swim is completed, the timing will be stopped to allow athletes to get changed into their bike/run gear.

What shoes should my child wear?

Normal running shoes are the only footwear permitted.

What kind of equipment does my child need to participate?

Accepted Answer

No specialist equipment is required. The only equipment needed is a bike and helmet. Bikes can be shared between team members as long as they are of similar height. However, every child must bring their own helmet.

What bike can my child use?

A mountain or hybrid bike are preferable as the bike section is on grass.

Do I need a swim cap?

You may use your own swim cap if you wish, but it is not a requirement.

Do I need a pair of swimming goggles?

It is recommended that you use them, but it is your choice.

When will I receive my race number/chip?

You will pick up your race numbers and safety pins at registration on the day of the event. You will also receive your timing chip and instructions on how to wear it at registration.

Can my child use stabilizers?

As our bike course is on grass we do not allow stabilizers.
