Open water swimming is one of the fastest-growing sports in the UK. The OWL qualification has been specifically designed to equip open water lifeguards with the skills required to supervise and provide rescue cover for planned, organised and risk assessed activities in still or non-tidal water.

This Qualification is not suitable for moving water environments.

These courses are 3 days 'classroom' hosted by Love Open Water Leeds, LS10 1LT

OWL Course Prerequisites:

Every candidate attending a OWL course must: 

  • Be 16-years-old or over at the time of assessment
  • Be competent and confident in open water
  • Be able to submerge under the water confidently
  • Before the course, candidates must be able to swim at least 400 metres in a pool/ open water swimming continuously on their front and show urgency.

Course Content

The Open Water Lifeguard Qualification, delivered over three days, is valid for two years and is independently assessed. The candidate manual and trainer resources help the Open Water Lifeguard Trainer Assessor deliver through the three sections:

  • Section 1 - The Open Water Lifeguard, environment, hazards and supervision
  • Section 2 - Responding to an emergency and taking action
  • Section 3 - CPR and First Aid

Course Assessment

The OWL course syllabus and practical skills are continually assessed by the course trainer and a suitable level competence must be achieved to be put forward for a final independent assessment.

The assessment will include verbal question and answer sessions, practical demonstrations of water rescue skills, CPR and First Aid

It is recomended that lifeguards engage in continuous training to ensure they are ready for duty and renewal.

Leeds Dock is steeped in history. It was constructed in 1800’s to service boats transporting commodities such as coal, along the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.

Our Leeds Dock site is based out of the Love Open Water gazebo positioned at the East/ South side of the dock, just down from the Royal Armouries.
