Open water swimming is one of the fastest-growing sports in the UK. The OWL qualification has been specifically designed to equip open water lifeguards with the skills required to supervise and provide rescue cover for planned, organised and risk assessed activities in still or non-tidal water.

This course is for those with a current OWL qualification which expires AFTER the final course date.

Whilst you still have a valid qualification you can complete 1.5 days (minimum 10 hours + assessment) course rather than completing a full 3 day course once your qualification has expired - please note you will need to provide your valid certification prior to the course starting

Course Pre-Requisites:

  • Have a current valid RLSS OWL qualifiaction which doesnt expire until after the course is completed.
  • Be 16-years-old or over at the time of assessment
  • Be competent and confident in open water
  • Be able to submerge under the water confidently
  • Be able to swim at least 400 metres in a pool/open water, swimming continuously on their front and showing urgency.

Course Content:

There are three sections to the course, and a candidate must pass all three to attain the qualification.

Section 1 – The Open Water Lifeguard, environment, hazards and supervision
Section 2 – Responding to an emergency and taking action
Section 3 – CPR and First Aid

Course Assessment

The course syllabus and practical skills are continually assessed by the course trainer and a suitable level competence must be achieved to be put forward for a final independent assessment.

The assessment will include verbal question and answer sessions, practical demonstrations of water rescue skills, CPR and First Aid

Love Open Waters London Royal Docks site is based at the west end of Royal Victoria Dock. Look for the pontoon opposite the City Hall Building – entrance is at the gate onto the pontoon. There are banners on the fencing by the gate and the pontoon is covered with green astro turf.

The closest station is Royal Victoria on the DLR and is only a few minutes walk. You can also use the Emirates Skyline – the terminal is 100m from the entrance gate.

There is very limited parking in the area.  Check the JustPark app for private spaces in Brittania Village which is a short walk from the venue.  There is also some paid parking on Dock Road though this can be busy during the week.  Currently this is free on Sundays.
