Question 1

What can I expect from a running Recce?

Accepted Answer

Recces allow you to get a feel for the route you will be racing on, whilst learning alot from our experienced guides about all things running in the mountains. Although these are great days for getting some good time spent on feet, please be aware these aren't races and we will move through the day at the speed of the steadiest runner. You may not get the KOTM but you will gain valuable experience and go into the race hopfully feeling more confident about what to expect.

What happens if the weather is forecast to be wet?

Accepted Answer

Be prepared to experience a variety of conditions.
Regardless of the time of year, we may experience cloud, rain, wind,
sun and even snow! The temperatures can be much cooler higher on
the mountain tops, so having layers that you can add to and take off
will work. Please ensure you have all the required equipment as
specified in the Kit List , this is for your safe enjoyment of the
mountain environment, and to protect you from unexpected weather
conditions. Your well experienced and Leader(s) will carry all
necessary group safety equipment. They will also be Emergency First
Aid qualified.
Please consider the worst-weather-scenario when preparing and
packing - who doesn’t like a spare pair of fresh clean socks!?

Question 3

How fit do I need to be?

Accepted Answer

To enjoy and succeed in this event you need to
be in good physical condition and able to
withstand sustained activity over the day,
including steeper ascents and descents. We
recommend you partake in active
walking/running/ swimming/cycling at least 3
time a week to fully enjoy this weekend of
running. We will cover some remote terrain
which may be rocky and uneven underfoot and
remember to include ‘hills’ in any training you do
– Eryri/Snowdonia is not flat!

Question 4

How do I get to the meeting location?

We do not provide transport to the meeting location so please give yourself eneough time to find parking near to where you start. There are some days when we will get the Snowdon Sherpa bus to the start of the route once you have met your guide, this will useually cost £3, and they take card or cash.

Question 5

I am feeling worried I may no be as fast as other people...

Accepted Answer

Please don't worry. Our days are made to feel really inclusive for everyone and cater for all abilities. They are not a race and we will take frequent little breaks to chat and talk all things trail running. Some practice of running on hilly terrain prior to the recce though will help you build some confidence before running in the mountains. Please do send us a message or give us a call if you would like to talk through anything before the day.

Question 6

What food shall bring along?

Accepted Answer

Try to eat a filling breakfast about 1 hour before your run start time
each day, complex carbohydrates and proteins. You need to carry at
least 2 litres of water, plus electrolytes for each day. Please bring
plenty of food and always pack a variety – both savoury and sweet
that will sustain you best. Choose complex carbohydrates and whole
foods, rather than overly sweet items. Mountainous running cannot be
sustained on gels alone - please do not plan to rely on gels for each
day.

Do I need to get insurance?

Accepted Answer

As a business, we have adequate liability insurance for the activities we offer. Once you have booked onto your day then we recommend you take out travel and trip insurance which will cover any unavoidable cancellations or accidents, especially if you are using public transport or planning on booking accommodation. Check for ‘Trip Cancellation’ cover on your policy.

Will there be toilet stops?

Accepted Answer

By booking on to a outdoor challenge you are participating in an outdoor activity where public toilets are not ‘the norm’. There are toilets if you are meeting for your recce in Llanberis and if the summit visitor centre is open on Snowdon, then toilets are accessible, though there may be a queue! However, the summit visitor centre and café cannot be relied on as it’s liable to close at short notice in poor weather. If you suffer from any medical conditions which mean you will need access to a toilet more often, then please do get in touch as we hope to make our events as accessible to as many people as we can. Going to the toilet ‘in the outdoors’ just needs some privacy, some sense of humour and some toilet tissue/rubbish bag, if applicable. This is so you can put any solids including toilet tissue in a rubbish bag and put this back in your rucksack, rather than leaving toilet tissue or baby wipes discarded on the mountain – please don’t!

What if I haven't run in the mountains before?

We all have to start somewhere! A recce is a great and supportive way to start building that experience. Although before you arrive some practice on some more technical trail runs, running downhills and hiking the up hills will really help, the more technical the terrain you can get onto the better! But please do get in touch before your recce if you are new to this amazing sport , so we can support and advise you on any queries so you can get the most out of your day!
