Why haven’t I received a confirmation email?

These are generated automatically at the time of booking and sent to your registered e-mail. If you haven’t received a confirmation email, please first check your spam or junk folder. If you still can not find a confirmation email, please contact us on contact@sportingeventsuk.com and we will assist. You can also check your list of booked events by logging into your profile on our website. You will find the login section in the top right hand corner.

I have previously volunteered at an event, how do I claim my race credit?

Thank you for taking the time to help make our events special. To claim your race credit for a future event, please email contact@sportingeventsuk.com with the event you wish to participate in (a few events are excluded from the scheme, but we will confirm via e-mail). Please note it is not possible to use a race credit once online entries have closed or if the event is already sold out.

What is involved being a volunteer?

There are many different roles available. As a volunteer you could be working as a marshal directing runners around the course, marshalling car parks, on the finish line giving out medals, collecting chips or on a water station.

What time will I be needed?

This will depend on the time the race starts. Pre-race instructions will be sent out on the Wednesday before the event takes place. We normally ask that you arrive an hour before the start time to allow a full marshal briefing, and time to get into to position.

How long will I be needed?

Accepted Answer

This will depend on the distance of the event and the position you have been given. Some marshal roles can be for a short time if you are only able to spare a few hours. We can cater for most and always appreciate any time that can be given.

What should I wear?

We advise you dress for the appropriate weather conditions. We will include what to expect in the pre-race instructions email. We would always recommend checking the weather forecast. We do live in the UK! Layers are always recommended due to the changeable nature of our great British weather. Make sure in hot weather you wear suncream (and bring extra) and sun hats to protect yourself as some parts of the routes can be exposed without shade. We lend out Hi-vis vests for all our volunteers, these can be collected at the race HQ before the briefing.

Do I need to have particular level of fitness?

Some roles may require you to be on your feet for an extended period of time or walking to a designated marshal point on the course. You will need to be physically fit enough to manage this. However, if you are unsure, then please don’t hesitate to get in touch at contact@sportingeventsuk.com. As a volunteer, you will need to understand your responsibility towards the health & safety of all those participating in the event, and will need to be physically able to assist where needed.

Will I need to bring anything on the day?

All volunteers should bring appropriate clothing for the weather forecast. If you are assigned a marshalling position for a particularly long race then you may want to bring a little chair to sit on. We provide all volunteers with a drink, however you may want to bring your own drinks, snacks/packed lunch if its a long event.

What do I need to become a volunteer?

To be 18 years or older

Your own transport

A fully charged mobile phone

W3W downloaded onto your phone (preferable, but not necessary)

To be of reasonable fitness and in good health; you will mostly be on the move and outside for the duration of the race.

A friendly and helpful disposition.

Ability to work as part of a team and take instruction.

What will I get in return?

An opportunity to volunteer in some amazing places, enjoy the buzz of a fantastic race day and meet lots of great people.

You will get a credit to run any event with us (excluding the Furley Page Whitstable 10k).

If you visit the 'Volunteering’ page on our website and click on the link ‘Enter now' to register. We ask that you fill in a short form and any information provided will be kept entirely confidential. All events can be found here, if you have any problems please email contact@sportingeventsuk.com and we will be happy to help!

Will a criminal conviction affect my application?

We may ask about criminal convictions where relevant. A conviction does not automatically exclude you from consideration. We assess all applications individually, taking into account the nature of the conviction, how long ago it occured, and its relevance to the position. All information is handled confidentially and assessed fairly.
