Race HQ will be located on Abbey Fields, close to the finish area just inside the track area as you come in the back gate from the car park.
There will be a Colchester Harriers Gazebo where the registration table is set up. Look out for race signage and happy runners on arrival!
Race HQ will be open from 08:20.

Race Start

The race will start promptly at 9.30am and you need to allow time (approximately 5 mins) to walk to St John’s Green where a short race briefing will take place between 9.20 and 9.25am. The quickest way is straight down Flagstaff Road and then turn right at the bottom. There are signs and marshals will guide you.

There are toilet blocks on the left as you enter the track from the Circular Road North gate. Additional portacabin loos will also be available. Please note, there will be no toilet provisions on the course.

Parking

There is parking on Abbey Fields; turn into Circular Road East from Circular Road North and the car park is towards the end of the road on the right. Marshals will guide you.

Please note this car park will close between 9.20 and 9.45am as the road to it is part of the course and will be closed.

There is further parking further along the road at the Napier Road Car Park, which is pay & display.

Only bone conducting headphones are permitted at this event.
If you are seen to be wearing in-the-ear or over-the-ear headphones by our Race Team or an England Athletics Adjudicator, then you are at risk of being disqualified.

Start: The start of the race is in front of Abbey Gate on Londinium Road about 5 - 8 minutes walk from the track. The race will start following a runners safety briefing on St John's Green.
Finish: On Abbey Fields.

Course & Terrain: The course is effectively a large lollipop with a ‘fairly’ straight out and back and a large loop, mostly on paths, of about 3.5miles. Between miles 1 and 2 it is a little narrow in places with a few twists and turns. This route enabled us to pass the crematorium where Arthur Whiston was laid to rest and so gives the course some individual significance. It is largely flat with a couple of small rises.

This is an accurately measured course.
Please follow the course as directed by the marshals and signage at all times.

Please do NOT drop litter. Bins will be provided, so please dispose of any litter correctly or take it home with you.

Water Stations

There will be a water station at half-way and more water available at the end. Water will be in bottles which will be partially opened for you. Please indicate to the volunteers as you approach the water station that you require a drink to make it easier for you to receive water quickly and safely.

This race is chip timed and we are delighted to be awarding prizes to the leading runners after the race. There are prizes for the first 3 Men and Women in the race and age categories. There is an U20 prize and then prizes are available to winners in 5 year age categories thereafter. We will also have prizes for the first Men’s and Women’s club teams.

Please note, unlike the county champs, a runner is only eligible for one prize which woud be the highest prize available. For EG. If a Vet 40 woman is second in the race, they will win the Senior second place prize only. The second V40 woman home would then take the V40 prize.

County Championship Medals: There will be championship medals available for finishers running as part of the Essex County Championships only. Medals are awarded to the first three EA athletes in each of the categories... U20 / Senior / Open (ages 20 - 39) and then bands of five years from V40 to V70 plus inclusive (age on the day). A veteran finishing in the top three is eligible to win an open medal (as well as an age group medal). Three clubs comprise a team. Scoring is based on finish positions of the EA athletes (lowest team score). A clubs fourth, fifth and sixth scorer can win team silver or bronze if their club win team gold.

Whilst many of our runners walk some brief sections of the race to catch breath, this race is designed for runners and is not suitable for walking the entire distance.

First Aid & Fitness

First Aid Provision:
First Aid will be in attendance for the duration of the race.
Should you feel unwell at any stage of the race, please do not hesitate to wave down a marshal and they will call First Aid for you and ensure you are well cared for.

If you are unable to make your way to the next marshal point, please advise a fellow runner and ask them to notify a marshal of your location.

Your Health & Fitness
Before attempting to race we ask that you make sure you are 100% fit to do so. If you feel unwell or are carrying an injury, we would strongly recommend not taking part and only return to running once you feel fully fit to do so. If you are unsure if you are fit to run, please speak to your doctor.

Whilst we all hope for lovely summer's day, in the interests of putting your safety and wellbeing first, please take a look at the below so that you can plan accordingly, run safely and continue to enjoy a super race day.

Please do not race if you do not feel well enough to do so.
Whilst we will do everything we can to ensure that you experience a comfortable, safe and enjoyable race day, you know your body and limitations the best and are responsible for your own health and wellbeing throughout the event. Please, do not push yourself if you feel unwell.

Be prepared...!
We ask that you (and any spectators that may be staying to support you) stay fully hydrated throughout the day and take measures against the heat of the day including bringing sun hats & spritzers and wearing sun cream, as needed.

A bit about water...
We will be providing ample water supplies; however, we highly recommend that runners (& spectators) bring their own water as well.
It is your own responsibility to remain adequately hydrated throughout the day. Whilst remaining hydrated, please also be aware not to over-hydrate and ensure that you are taking on enough salts, if appropriate.

A note on shade...
Please note, that spectators will also need to give some thought to shade for the duration of the race. You may want to consider bringing a parasol.

First Aid...
First Aid will be on site for the duration of the race; please do not hesitate to let a marshal know if you start to feel unwell at any time and they will arrange a visit to see the First Aid team asap. Don't be tempted to put off a visit to see the First Aid team; if you feel unwell then please get yourself checked immediately.

Whilst we will have a fantastic team on site to facilitate this, we still ask that you please allow plenty of time to make your collection before the race begins.

If you are a relatively late entry and have registered close to race day or if you need to collect a new race bib for any reason, then we recommend taking a screenshot of your booking confirmation email with your details on it to present to the team on the day. We get to run in some beautiful places but this can mean that internet and phone signals can be difficult.

Please remember to complete your medical information on the reverse of your number before you race. This is a life-saving racing requirement for your own safety.

Essex County Championship

This race forms part of the Essex County Championships and you have the option of racing as part of the championship or not. You do not have to be participating in the Championship in order to take part in the Arthur Whiston 5 Mile.

Transfer Deadlines:
10:00 on the Friday before race day.

Transfer Costs:
A transfer to another runner can be made free of charge.

How to self-manage your transfer:
Transfers are something that the system allows you to self manage by working through the following steps:

1. Access your booking via the 'View Booking' link in your booking confirmation email.
2. Follow steps through to 'Manage Booking & 'Transfer to someone else' and you will be guided through managing this transfer by the system.
3. Once you have entered the new runner's email, a transfer notification will be sent to them and they will need to accept the place and enter their full details to complete the process.
4. If you have already received your race bib prior to the transfer taking place, you will need to ensure that you give this to the new runner.

Unfortunately, we do not offer refunds of race entry fees for illness, injury, or any other reason. In much the same way as you would not expect a refund for a theatre ticket if you were unable to attend, we are unable to offer refunds for race entries sold.

The Arthur Whiston 5 is donating any profits to two excellent charities: The Essex Wildlife Trust, and Beat.

The Essex Wildlife Trust was Arthur's favourite charity and they are an organisation committed to protecting and sustaining local wildlife with well-founded charity lists to the Wildlife Trusts across the UK. It was a cause that was dear to Arthur's heart and, as such, one that the race will continue to honour.

Beat is the UK's leading charity supporting those affected by eating disorders and campaigning on their behalf. At least 1.25 million people in the UK suffer from these illnesses, many in secret. They are of all ages, genders and backgrounds – eating disorders do not discriminate. Beat are there to help.
